These sweet Valentine’s Day sweater hearts are so easy to make – and best of all you can choose whether to sew by hand or sew by machine!

Here’s How to Make Sweater Valentine Hearts

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies and Materials

You will need:

  • scissors
  • an old red or pink sweater you want to upcycle and are okay with cutting up
  • matching pink or red embroidery floss
  • sewing needle
  • Stuffing {You can use poly stuffing or cotton balls since these are so small!}

Once you have your supplies gathered you are ready for the next step!

Step 2: Cut Out 2 Heart Shapes From the Sweater

It can be helpful to first print out a heart shape on paper and then cut that out to use as a template. Of course, if you have a Cricut, Sizzix or Accuquilt machine, doing this accurately is a whole lot easier!

Step 3: Pin the 2 Hearts Together, Right Sides Facing In

The next step is to pin the two heart shaped fabric cut outs together, with the “right side” facing in. {Fortunately, if you mess up, knit sweaters don’t typically have a wrong side, they just have a different pattern!}

Step 4: Sew the Hearts Together

It’s best to sew the hearts together using a whip stitch if sewing by hand, as this will help prevent them from unraveling in the future. If sewing by machine, you may want to use a zig zag stitch.

Be sure to leave enough space at the end that you don’t stuff so you have room to add stuffing!

Step 5: Turn Right Side Out and Fill

The next step is to turn the sewn heart right side out and stuff with filling. You can use cotton balls or poly stuffing that is often used for stuffed animals and other plush toys.

Step 6: Finish with a Ladder Stitch to Close

The final step is to close up the gap from earlier with a ladder stitch. This is an easy stitch you can learn from watching YouTube tutorials.

These sweater hearts couldn’t be sweeter and are a great way to add to your DIY Valentine’s Day decorations or gifts! Of course, you can always use ANY fabric of your choice for making these, so don’t be afraid to use quilting cotton, denim, or even fancy fabrics like silk or minky fabric!

I hope you enjoy making these and of course if you do make these easy DIY Valentine’s Day fabric hearts, I’d love to hear about what you create in the comments section below!
